Boy in a wheelchair with his friendApril is Autism Awareness Month. Imagine your mom or dad talking to you, but you can’t understand what they’re saying. Or maybe you can understand them, but you can’t talk back. That’s what it’s like to have autism. Autism is a disorder that makes it hard to process what’s going on around you. Every second, our brain makes sense of the things we see, smell, touch, hear, and taste. But when the brain develops differently, it can have trouble realizing these things, making it hard to talk, listen, understand, learn, and play. That’s why people with autism might need extra help communicating, but that doesn’t mean anything is wrong with them! We each talk and understand things a little differently.
