Oneness Through Brokenness
Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada, and our church celebrated Communion last Sunday. And as I took the bread that was broken, I thought about the body of Jesus broken for me. Same thing with the wine – his blood, shed for me. I took a few long moments to ponder how and why God chose Communion to symbolize our union with Christ. Why these symbols of brokenness to reinforce our oneness with him? Well, when we take Communion, it’s a time that we identify with the suffering of Christ.
True, there are other ways we might identify with Jesus: times of joy, times of healing, times of prayer, fellowship with like-hearted friends. But nothing, I mean nothing, draws us closer to him than suffering. And Communion provides that chance for you and I to remember that the most God-forsaken man who ever lived suffered so that you might never be forsaken and forgotten. That’s something to celebrate the next time you take Communion.
