Broken Dreams
“A man’s heart plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.”
Proverbs 16:9
I love reading about Lewis and Clark. In 1804, they led an expedition up the Missouri River to find the fabled Northwest Passage, a “waterway” connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. When Clark finally reached the headwaters of the Missouri in the Rockies, he climbed a ridge, thinking that he would see a river on the other side leading to the ocean. He stood, aghast. The dream that started with Christopher Columbus centuries ago suddenly died. Because as far as he could see, there were only mountains. But instantly Clark refused to wallow in disappointment. Winter was coming, and they had to keep moving. Proverbs 16 says, “A man’s heart plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.” Do you have some plans that have disappointed you? Don’t wallow in a broken dream. Keep moving forward. According to Proverbs 16, the Lord determines that you do it.
