Silent Before You

“The Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him.”
Habakkuk 2:20
California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains rise abruptly from the floor of the Mojave Desert—a dramatic vista in whatever season you visit. Winter is especially lovely, when the mountains and surrounding desert are covered in snow. It’s a quiet world. Not a stirring in the air, not the sound of a car in the distance, not the buzzing of an insect.
In today’s Scripture, the prophet wrote, “The Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him.” The awesome display of God’s creative power seems even more majestic when enveloped in silence. Find time to get outside today and quiet your heart before Him. You may not be near a mountain or in a desert, and you may not be able to shut out the sounds of traffic. But you can step away from the chatter of others’ voices and electronic devices and invite Him to speak to you. “Be still,” He may tell you, “and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).
Lord of creation, help me not to rush into Your presence today, but to praise You with a quiet heart rather than in a tumble of words. Help me to find long moments to be silent before You. I’ve read Your Word, but I need to hear Your voice, sense Your direction, and enter into Your peace.
