A Great Cloud of Witnesses

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Hebrews 12:1–2
We behave differently when we know people are observing us. It’s true, isn’t it? We bite our tongues, try to smile, hold our tempers, and say kind, courteous words. That’s why today’s Scripture is so encouraging, reminding us “since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.”
If there really are people in the grandstands watching us, it moves us to make sure our walk matches our talk. Those in the stands could include departed family members and friends—a godly grandmother, a father, a sister, a teacher, or a coach. It may also include a host of Old and New Testament saints—Daniel, David, Esther, Mary Magdalene, Paul, and John. It may even include angels. They are our witnesses, urging us to persevere, reminding us that time is fleeting, and cheering me on to obedience.
Lord Jesus, whether or not departed saints are watching me from heavenly grandstands, I know You are watching me. Please let me remember this in my moments of anger or frustration or when I’m tempted to let my mind wander from You. I do want to please You. Thank You for watching me and guiding my steps.
