From Fear to Faith
“Moses said to the Lord… ‘Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me now your ways, that I may know you in order to find favor in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people.’ And he said, ’My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.'”
Exodus 33:12-14 (ESV)
Right after my accident, I struggled with a terrifying fear of the future. I panicked at the idea of sitting down for the rest of my life without use of my hands or legs. I reasoned that I could accept things if only God would show me his plan for my future. I wanted approval of his blueprint for me. If only he would give me a hint of how things would all turn out, then I would be able to trust him.
That’s not how God works. Just look at how he answered Moses in Exodus 33. A little unsure of what lay ahead in a wilderness filled with dangers, our friend Moses wanted God to explain the plan before he agreed to it. Instead, the Lord replied, “I will personally go with you.”
Moses was denied a peek into the future. Instead, he would soon learn that having God’s presence guide him was a whole lot better than depending on a roadmap.
Isn’t that every Christian’s struggle? God sets us on some path or tells us to do something, but before we set out, we want to know what he has in mind. “Tell me what is going on, God,” we insist.
But the plan is God. Jesus is the Way. God will personally go with us, and we couldn’t have a safer, more dependable, more trustworthy guide. So, friend, stay hot on his heels for he is the path.
Jesus, I thank you that you have promised to be with me always, no matter what the future holds. When I am afraid of the unknown, remind me that knowing you is enough.
