Generosity often begins with a simple question: Who receives the first and best of what God has given me?

During a time of famine, a man arrived bringing twenty loaves of barley bread and fresh grain as an offering to Elisha. It was a generous gift, especially in a season when food was scarce.

At first glance, his offering may not seem remarkable. Yet it represented something important. He brought the firstfruits of his harvest. Before meeting his own needs or storing provisions for the future, he honored God with the first portion.

His act reflected a heart of trust.

Firstfruits giving was never merely about agriculture. It was a declaration that everything ultimately belonged to God. By giving the first and best, God’s people acknowledged that He was their Provider and that they trusted Him for the harvest yet to come.

Elisha immediately instructed his servant to distribute the food to one hundred men.

The servant protested. The amount seemed insufficient. How could such a small offering feed so many people?

Yet God multiplied what had been given. Everyone ate. Everyone was satisfied. Food remained afterward, just as the Lord had promised.

The story reminds us that generosity is not primarily about quantity. It is about priority. The man brought God his firstfruits because he trusted God’s character. He believed that honoring the Lord would never leave him lacking.

That same principle applies today. When we give God the first part of our time, attention, resources, and affection, we are declaring that He is our source and our security.

Giving God the first portion isn’t generosity; it’s a declaration. You’re saying, “He is my source, not my surplus.”
