The Man Beside the Pool of Bethesda

John 5:1–15
“Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”
John 5:8
Waiting can be exhausting.
For thirty-eight years, a man whose name we never learn sat beside the Pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem. Day after day, he watched others come and go. Day after day, he carried the weight of disappointment. His physical condition had left him unable to walk, and hope had likely faded long ago.
When Jesus approached this man, He asked a surprising question: “Do you want to get well?”
At first, the man answered by explaining his problem. He had no one to help him into the pool. Others always got there first. The obstacles seemed overwhelming.
Jesus did not discuss the obstacles. Instead, He gave a command. “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”
Imagine hearing those words after nearly four decades of disability. The command must have seemed impossible. Yet something remarkable happened. The man obeyed.
Scripture says that “at once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.”
The miracle was entirely the work of Jesus, but the man still had to respond. He had to trust Christ enough to act on what He said.
Many of us know what it feels like to wait. We wait for healing. We wait for answers. We wait for circumstances to change. Sometimes the waiting lasts much longer than we expected.
In those moments, faith does not mean understanding everything God is doing. Faith means responding to what He has already said.
The man beside the pool could not heal himself. But he could obey the voice of Jesus.
The same is true for us. We may not control our circumstances, but we can trust Christ and take the next step He places before us.
Faith that obeys doesn’t require a full explanation, just a willing first step in the direction of His voice.

Learning to Wait
Waiting on the Lord is hard, but it means putting his desires before your own and believing that he will meet your needs in his good time. Before any decision, pray and quiet yourself in God’s presence and seek his mind and heart.
