Momentary Troubles

“For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.”   

2 Corinthians 4:17 

A lifetime in a wheelchair is a very difficult proposition. Impossible? No. But it can certainly feel utterly overwhelming. How, then, can a Christian with quadriplegia—or any other disease or disability—keep a happy heart, a bright attitude, and a sharp focus? It’s best explained by today’s Scripture: “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.”  

I believe this to be literally true. Since it is actually our troubles that produce the glory, then the greater the afflictions suffered, the greater the glory these troubles create for us! The only catch is that we must trust God through it all. We must trust Him when life becomes terribly, even unbearably difficult. As we do, our very real hardships feel lighter and lighter—almost “momentary,” as Scripture says. There is, for certain, a greater glory awaiting on our horizon.  

Your truth, Lord, brings such comfort. I believe Your Word today, though it makes no logical sense to the world. If I endure troubles today, staying positive and trusting You, it’s the same as depositing glory into my future account. And the glory will far, far outweigh, overwhelm, and surpass my heartaches and troubles in this brief life on earth. I believe it, Jesus, and I am content.
