Rita Has Found Her Voice
“We never found anyone to help us until you came!” said Rita with joy, as she was fitted for her new wheelchair by Wheels for the World therapists at the Ghana outreach. Disabled by polio as an infant, Rita has never walked. She has crawled to school every year, determined to succeed even in a country where disabled people like her are stigmatized and shunned. Time and again she applied for a wheelchair from the government only to be turned down each time. “Psalm 23 tells me that the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want,” Rita told us. “When man says no, God says yes!” She continued, “My dream is to feel socially valued, to be economically able. The school for communication technology is in town. This wheelchair from Joni and Friends gives me independence and makes that dream possible.” With every prayer you pray and every gift you give, you are saying yes to God’s beautiful plan for disabled people of all ages just like Rita. When you send a wheelchair and a Bible as tangible, hands-on help, lives like Rita’s are changed forever. “Because of you, many of us are being lifted off the ground and equipped to do the things God has prepared for us to do. I am very grateful,” Rita said. This bright young woman is part of a new Ghanaian generation, empowered by your generosity and God’s faithfulness to overcome disability, social stigma, discrimination, and isolation. Rita has found her voice. In her wheelchair, now she will be heard.
