On The Brink Of Despair
Four-year-old Katya from El Salvador was born blind and with cerebral palsy. She, like other children in developing nations, was subjected to shame and rejection because she was born with a disability. In her culture, many believe that a baby born with a disability is cursed. Feeling helpless and on the brink of despair, Katya’s parents, Wilfred and Magaly, arrived at our Wheels for the World outreach with their daughter, hoping to receive a wheelchair for her.
Life is not easy for Katya and for her parents because of her disability. “Katya’s condition has been very, very hard on us as a couple. We both lost our jobs, and this has been a time of tremendous trials… and yet, God has met our needs every day,” Magaly shared with us.
As our Wheels for the World volunteers tenderly lifted Katya from her mother’s arms and carefully assessed her needs, they searched for just the right pediatric wheelchair. Once they found the right one, and adjusted it to fit her needs, they placed Katya in it and watched her smile with joy!
This wheelchair was more than Katya’s parents ever dreamed possible for their daughter. Now they can take her to a nearby school for the blind where she will begin learning and becoming everything that God intends her to be.
As Katya and her family left our Wheels for the World outreach with a new wheelchair, Magaly whispered to us in astonishment, “God has met us today. We know that the Lord is here with us because of you. We can hardly believe you would generously give us a wheelchair.”
It’s amazing how one wheelchair will open the hearts and minds of families living with disability, showing them the love and hope of Jesus! Thank you for your partnership that sends the Gospel and practical help to thousands of people living with disability around the world just like Katya and her family.
