Warrior Getaway is a Catalyst for Hope and Healing

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Jeremiah 29:11

The families of wounded Veterans are desperate for respite and spiritual nourishment. In a culture that puts so much emphasis on being connected, these families are just around the corner in our churches, neighborhoods, and communities feeling isolated and sorely misunderstood.

They yearn for acceptance, understanding, and a safe place to be vulnerable.

Travis, Farrah, and their two daughters found that place at our Texas Warrior Getaway where they experienced community with those who share the same unique struggles. They arrived empty, but left filled with lasting memories, treasured friendships, and renewed hope in Jesus! Just listen to their journey of perseverance and courage.

After two deployments as a sniper in Iraq and Afghanistan, Travis returned home broken – suffering from depression, Post-Traumatic Stress and a Traumatic Brain Injury. The war within him was still raging, and his wife, Farrah, and their two daughters walked on eggshells around Travis – never knowing what might trigger an outburst in him. They lived in an endless cycle of uncertainty, fearful of the explosive episode that was always looming.

Farrah and the girls lived on edge, and in Travis’s mind, suicide was his only way out.

“As a man and as a Marine, I couldn’t get any lower. But the gun jammed, and then it jammed again! How in the world could a gun jam multiple times in the hands of a weapons specialist?”

Travis

There was only one answer. “God intervened,” says Travis. And the very next day he packed up his family and headed to our Texas Warrior Getaway, where his hopelessness was turned into hope.

Farrah discovered a supernatural peace that came only from the Lord, and Travis came to the realization that he couldn’t win his battle on his own. Even though the word “surrender” is not part of a soldier’s vocabulary, Travis declared, “Lord, I need you!” He surrendered to Jesus and started his journey towards a new life and healing in Christ!

“If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

2 Corinthians 5:17

Farrah explains that Warrior Getaway “is like heaven where we’re surrounded by families who battle the same challenges and who could safely be real and vulnerable with each other.”

Warrior Getaway is the catalyst Jesus used to jumpstart Travis’s healing journey.

Travis is one of countless Veterans living with invisible disabilities associated with combat injury. The daily life of Warriors in a foreign land is one of survival, brutality, perpetual adrenaline rushes, and even more devastating, moral injury that results from exposure to extreme situations that contradict one’s deeply held moral beliefs. When our Veterans return home, guilt, shame, and remorse become the new enemies.

But Warrior Getaway brings our servicemen and women – and their families – real hope in Jesus that lasts!
