Hailey and James sitting in the grassHailey couldn’t run as fast as her younger sisters because the muscles in her legs were weak from muscular dystrophy. Although she had muscular dystrophy, Hailey felt just like any other kid—until she went to kindergarten. The kids at her school were quick to point out Hailey’s differences. And even worse, they left her out of games at recess. Hailey cried every afternoon those first few days of school, telling her mom that no one would play with her. Then Hailey met James. He didn’t like the way the other kids mistreated Hailey. James started to look out for her. They played together at recess and if someone said an unkind word to Hailey, James spoke up and let them know it was not nice. Hailey and James became best friends because he didn’t just see her disability, he saw her ABILITY to be a great friend!
