Carried to Thanksgiving
Years ago, during a season when I had to be in bed for a long time in order to heal pressure sores, Ken surprised me with an amazing gift – he rented a gurney. What kind of a gift is that, right? Well, just imagine: he rolled it through our house, to my bedside. Then he lifted me out of bed and positioned me carefully onto it. And then? He wheeled me to our dining table for a fabulous dinner.
It was a visible example of King David’s words in Psalm 23. God had prepared a table for me in the presence of my enemies—the enemies of depression and loneliness. It may not have been Thanksgiving Day, but after being so long in bed, it felt heavenly to join my friends for a feast at our dinner table – even if I had to lie flat.
Yes, someone had to feed me, but that was okay; my heart was filled with gratitude. Ken inasmuch “carried” me to the table.
Today, you might not be lying flat on a gurney like I was all those years ago, yet perhaps you, too, are in the presence of your enemies… loneliness, fear, regret, worry, stress…
If so, look for ways that God is preparing a table for you right now, today, in the presence of those very same enemies. Let the Good Shepherd refresh your soul and comfort you, to lead you beside quiet waters and overflow your cup. Then thank the Lord for how he has carried you to his table.
Happy Thanksgiving!
