O Worship the King

Joni at the Grand CanyonRecently while Ken was fishing in Montana, my sister Kathy and I took a road trip to the Grand Canyon. As I sat at the rim and looked out, I began softly singing the old hymn, “O Worship the King.” But when I got to the last line on the last verse, “Our Maker, Defender, Redeemer and…”, well, I simply could not choke out the word Friend. In tears, I wondered aloud, “How is it that you, Jesus, the Lord of the universe, the Creator of such magnificent beauty would want me as your friend?! Amazing!” Wonder of wonders, Jesus Himself says, “I no longer call you servants…Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you” (John 15:15). Take a moment and be astounded that God has chosen you as His friend – and then, don’t forget ‘live out’ your side of the friendship today.
