Rachel’s Gift
Whenever I travel, I can always expect a few “divine appointments.” During my recent trip to Indiana, I met Rachel, a 38-year-old woman who has cerebral palsy. Ever since she read the Joni book as a little girl, Rachel has been a faithful supporter of Joni and Friends. She loves our Wheels for the World outreach, and always dreamed of being able to provide a wheelchair to a child in need – but the chances of that seemed unlikely. Although she gives monthly what little she can, Rachel lives with her parents and finances are tight; she depends on SS Disability for income. One day, Rachel received an unexpected refund check from the Social Security office. This young woman knew exactly what to do with that money… it was enough for two wheelchairs!
Included with Rachel’s donation was a letter from her mother, explaining how God had provided the money to make Rachel’s dream come true. She wrote, “Rachel shed tears knowing she could give to a child and adult that do not have the means to have [a wheelchair].” Godfrey, our Joni and Friends’ Director of Finance was so touched when he read the note, he contacted Rachel’s family. That’s when they learned I would be speaking at a church 3 hours from their home. This amazing family made the 3-hour trek to the church so I could spend ‘girlfriend’ time with Rachel. I cherished our afternoon together; Rachel’s faith is so inspiring! Using my iPhone, we made a little video recording. It’s just a snapshot of this remarkable woman, but I know it will encourage you as it did me.
