Three More Tips for Babysitting Kids with Disabilities

KidsThis week Kids’ Corner has been talking about babysitting kids who have special needs. Read Monday’s post and Wednesday’s post to catch up!

1. Ask lots of questions. If one of the kids starts getting upset, what are ways to calm her down? Does she have any allergies? What are the big no-nos the kids might try? Don’t be afraid to ask a stupid question. The parents will be glad you want to take good care of their kids!

2. Don’t be too helpful. Just because a child has special needs, doesn’t mean you will need to do everything for him. Encourage the child to do what he can do. On the other hand, don’t push him too much! If you have questions about what you can expect the child to do, ask the parents! (See Tip #1!)

3. Be ready to call for back up. Ask the parents for phone numbers of people you can call for help if something unusual happens and you don’t know what to do. Ask your mom or dad if they can be your “Phone a Friend” help, too.

That wraps up our week of tips. Do you have other tips for babysitting a family when one or more of the kids have special needs? Let us know!
