Meet Jessica and Mike Beates

At Family Retreats, we met the most amazing families—like Jessica and her parents. I first met the Beates back in the early 90s, when they arrived at the camp with their daughter Jessica (who was around 9 or 10 at the time). When Jessica was born, her parents were elated. But just a few months later, they discovered that Jessica would be different from most children. That’s because Jessica has profound and severe disabilities, affecting both her mind and body. She cannot speak or care for herself, she cannot walk — but, oh, can Jessica communicate with that award-winning smile of hers! Today, Jessica is a joyful adult in her 30s who loves shopping, listening to music and even goes bowling (with a little help of course). And her father? Mike Beates serves as the Board of Directors of Joni and Friends, helping guide out ministry theologically and with a real heart of compassion for people with disabilities.
