David and Mephibosheth
You’ve heard the story about David and Goliath. Have you ever heard the story about David and Mephibosheth? Mephibosheth (say meh-FIB-o-sheth) was the son of David’s best friend Jonathan. He was also the grandson of King Saul. Back in those days, when a new king came, he would be mean to the family of the king before him. The new king would want to make sure that no one tried to take his place. So Mephibosheth and all of the people who lived with him ran away and hid to make sure they stayed safe. When they were running away, Mephibosheth fell and hurt his legs so badly that he couldn’t walk any more. Lots of people would have forgotten Mephibosheth, but not David! He wanted to find him just so David could be kind to him. He said, “God has been very kind to me. I would like to be kind to that person in the same way” 2 Kings 9:3 (NIrV). Do you remember to be kind to others because God has been kind to you? Read all of the story about David and Mephibosheth in today’s reading for reading the Bible chronologically with Joni and Ken.
