Garrett at Special Needs Fall Fest“Is it today? Is it today?” Garrett asked his mom the same question every morning for three weeks. A Special Needs Fall Fest was coming to his church! You might wonder, Why is he so excited? Maybe your family goes to lots of fairs and carnivals with yummy candy apples, fun games and rides, but for many children who have a disability, those festivals aren’t much fun at all. Most carnival games and rides are not made so someone in a wheelchair can enjoy them. Plus, the loud noises, big crowds and colorful lights can upset children with autism. But when Joni and Friends works with churches to host fun events designed especially for children with special needs, there are lots of things kids like Garrett can do! Small changes can make a big difference in helping ALL children feel comfortable, be safe and have fun. Besides, no one likes to feel left out. In Luke 14:21 Jesus told about a big celebration and how important it was to invite and welcome those with disabilities. On the day of the fall festival, Garrett felt very welcome! With a big smile on his face he went from one game to the next, enjoying every minute… and a little fluffy cotton candy along the way!
