Betty’s Life Has New Hope

“This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NLT)

Meet our Friend Betty:

Betty lives in Uganda. In her community, some people view disability as a curse, a bad omen, or a hex from animist spirits. People with disabilities too often face a stigma, resulting in social isolation and lack of access. They get dismissed as “cursed.”

For Betty, who was born with cerebral palsy, her disability has caused profound difficulties for her and her family.

Because Betty can’t walk and her family couldn’t afford a wheelchair for her, she often had to crawl through the dirt, which exacerbated the exclusion that her family frequently experienced.

When Betty and her family came to Joni’s House Uganda, they found holistic help, including a wheelchair for Betty and physical and occupational therapies to help maximize her mobility and flexibility, and prevent muscle atrophy.

At Joni’s House Betty has also experienced a new level of belonging and inclusion—and the delight she feels when she comes through the door shines brightly through her smile.

Through the belonging, access, material support, and complete care that Joni’s House provides, all in the name of Jesus, Betty and her family now understand God’s great love in a new way. They see that Betty has been fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of our great Creator—not cursed but blessed and beloved.

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

Psalm 139:14

“Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.… Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full.”

Luke 14:21, 23 (NIV)
