Retreats and Getaways Reach People with Disabilities Around the World!

A scene of an older boy in a pool smiling and laughing as three younger girls splash him from behind, a Joni and Friends Family Retreat sign in the Spanish hung in the background.

This year Joni and Friends Retreats and Getaways are serving people with disabilities across the globe! In addition to our 72 Retreats and Getaways in the United States, we’re facilitating 44 International Family Retreats in more than 20 countries, from Peru to Ghana to Poland and beyond!

At each International Family Retreat, Joni and Friends brings the love and hope of Christ to families living with disability.

In partnership with local churches, we are helping these families find hope, dignity, and their place in the body of Christ. For a window into International Family Retreat, meet a few of our friends from Peru…

Lucero

Lucero is a 17-year-old girl with spinal muscular atrophy. She lives with her mother, sister, and maternal grandmother in Peru.

Her father abandoned her, and she has suffered acutely from bullying.

She arrived at Family Retreat depressed and discouraged, but left filled with strength and confidence in Christ, having accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior!

Valentina

Nine-year-old Valentina has cerebral palsy and epilepsy. Her father left the family, and her mother is unable to care for Valentina due to her own disabilities.

Valentina’s grandmother cares for her and brought both Valentina and her mother to our Peru Family Retreat.

Valentina loved being with the other children at Family Retreat. Her mother and grandmother accepted Christ while they were there!

“I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the Lord. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart.”

Jeremiah 24:7

Maria and Priscilla

Maria and Priscilla both live with disabilities. Maria is five years old and has Down syndrome. Her sister, Priscilla, is eight and suffers with heart failure and malformation of her limbs. Their parents had a relationship with Jesus before the girls were born, but lost hope in the hardships of life. “They lost their faith,” explains a family friend.

But at Family Retreat in Peru, our volunteers made sure that Priscilla and Maria were well cared for so their parents could have time to reconnect with each other and with Christ. Their mother had a special time of reconciliation with God, and their father returned to the Lord! After returning home from Family Retreat, this precious family has started attending church again!
