Depend on the Father
Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada, and have you ever noticed how many hymns talk about how much we need God; how much we depend on him? Hymns like “I Need Thee Every Hour” or “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms” or “A Shelter in the Time of Storm.” You know, some cynics would say those hymns only reinforce how God is just an emotional crutch. One philosopher even said, “Christians are emotional cripples who need God as their crutch.” But you know what? I don’t think that’s such a bad thing. In fact, the Bible says it’s a good thing. God’s Word underscores time and again how weak and needy we are, and how strong and powerful God is! Just like a child emotionally depends on his father, we as God’s children depend on him. And it’s the wise person who leans on the everlasting arms. So keep on singing those hymns about depending on the Lord. Because to do so is not to use a crutch. It is to hold onto the cross.
