Grete’s New Wheelchair Changed Her Life

Three-year-old Grete can light up a room with her smile!

Despite a rare congenital condition that causes mobility-limiting deformities, Grete radiates energy and happiness. She loves to sing and count and move in every way possible. says Grete’s mom, Jani.

“She commands your attention, and she doesn’t take ‘no’ for an answer,”

Greta’s Mom – Jani

On a recent trip to Cuba, our Wheels for the World™ team from Dallas met Grete and her family. Jani, a single mother, struggles to care for Grete and her older brother on her own. She also maintains a demanding job, trying to make ends meet for the family. By the end of each day, Jani finds herself drained.

With her physical and financial resources spread thin, Jani longed to buy a wheelchair for Grete, but couldn’t afford one.

Forced to carry Grete everywhere they went, Jani and her children faced growing isolation. So Jani turned to the Lord for help.

“I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry.”

Psalm 40:1

At our wheelchair distribution center in Santa Clara, Cuba, God turned life around for Grete and her family.

Grete received a wheelchair, specially fitted by our therapists, which will give her greater security, mobility, and independence.

While Grete delights in her wheelchair, and the freedom it gives her, Jani benefits just as much. No longer forced to carry Grete wherever they go, Jani sees the world opening before them in a new way.

“I cannot wait to take her to church so that everyone can see her new wheelchair that was given in love!”

Soon, Grete will start kindergarten. Jani hopes Grete will learn to write her name by holding a pencil in her mouth, just like Joni! In addition to the gifts of mobility and dignity that come with a wheelchair, Grete experienced the hands-on love of Jesus through Joni and Friends.

This love has strengthened her whole family and poured new hope and energy into their lives. Joni and Friends Dallas serves families like Grete’s, living with disability, both locally and internationally.

Through our Wheels for the World trips, we meet and care for families by delivering much-needed medical mobility devices and sharing the Gospel.

While Wheels for the World has delivered over 200,000 wheelchairs so far, more work awaits! For every family we have touched, many more continue to pray, wait, and seek the Lord’s provision and help.

With your generous support, Joni and Friends works toward our God-sized vision: a world where every person with a disability finds hope, dignity, and their place in the body of Christ. Give today to make this vision a reality!
