California legislation AB506 requires that volunteers serving with children must complete a Live Scan background check. All Joni and Friends volunteers serving in California must complete a Live Scan background check to serve at Retreats & Getaways.

Live Scan is a digital fingerprint submission transmitted electronically to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) that must be completed in person by going to a Live Scan location.

Joni and Friends has partnered with Certifix to make getting a Live Scan background check easy! Certifix locations are available all across the state.

Before going to complete a Live Scan fingerprint, applicants must:

  1. Complete the “Applicant Information” portion of the “Request for Live Scan Service” form.
  2. Print the completed “Request for Live Scan Service” form.
  3. Print the “Certifix Live Scan Account” flyer.
  4. Find a Certifix location nearest to you and schedule an appointment.

Bringing one appropriate form of identification and the printed forms, go to a Certifix location to get fingerprinted.

Appropriate forms of identification include:

  • State-issued driver’s license or State-issued ID
  • U.S. Passport or U.S. Passport Card
  • Federal Government Personal Identity Verification Card (PIV)
  • Uniformed Services Identification Card

Using the provided form allows volunteers to complete a Live Scan at no cost to them and instead bills Joni and Friends. If an applicant chooses to get a Live Scan at a non-Certifix location, they will be responsible to pay for it out of pocket. If you don’t have a Live Scan location nearby, please contact your event point of contact for assistance.

For California residents, it will take approximately 7 days to get results, but it could potentially take longer. The DOJ estimates that it can take up to 12 weeks to get results for an out of state Live Scan.

In order for a volunteer’s application to be considered, a Live Scan background check must be processed, so applicants are encouraged to complete a Live Scan as soon as possible.

What if I live outside California but am serving at a Joni and Friends event in California, do I need to complete a Live Scan?2026-04-14T14:47:38-07:00

Yes, any volunteer 18 years and older serving at an event in California must complete the Live Scan background check.

What is the process for completing a Live Scan if I am coming from outside of California?2026-04-14T15:56:52-07:00

For volunteers applying from outside of CA, you will go through a different process to complete a Live Scan to serve at a CA event. Joni and Friends has partnered with Certifix to make getting a Live Scan background check easy and free to you!

Certifix locations are available all across the U.S. Applicants can find a location here by clicking on the state you live in. Using the provided information allows volunteers to complete a Live Scan at no cost to them and Joni and Friends to be billed. If an applicant chooses to get a Live Scan at a non-Certifix location, they will be responsible to pay for it out of pocket.

Before completing a Live Scan fingerprint, applicants must follow the steps below to enroll in the California Fingerprint Submission service through Certifix Live Scan.

  • To begin, select “Enroll Now” under “California Out-of-State Fingerprinting (FD-258)”

Step 1

Enter your ZIP code and State to search for and choose a Certifix location near you.

Step 2

Enter the following on the “Application Submission” page.

  • ORI: AT873
  • Authorized Applicant Type: VOLUNTEER/VCA
  • Type of License/Certification/Permit OR Working Title: Volunteer

Click “Show More” to input the following information.

Step 3

Complete the “Applicant Info” section by answering all required questions.

Step 4

Complete the “Transaction Info & Employer” section using the following information:

  • OCA: Leave this blank
  • You MUST check the FBI box
  • Billing Number: Leave this blank

Step 5

Complete “Payment” section using the following information.

  • Click “Charge to Account”
  • Account Number: 21260

Note: Using the information provided above allows you to complete a Live Scan at no cost to you and instead bills Joni and Friends. If you choose to get a Live Scan at a non-Certifix location, you will be responsible for the cost. If you don’t have a Live Scan location nearby, please contact your event point of contact for assistance.

Step 6

To get fingerprinted, schedule an appointment with Certifix and bring with you:

  1. Two appropriate forms of identification.
  2. The QR Code emailed to you by Certifix.

Step 7

During your fingerprint appointment, ask the technician to print and provide you with two copies of your Fingerprint Hard Card (FD-258).

The DOJ estimates that it can take up to 12 weeks to get results for an out-of-state Live Scan, so you are encouraged to complete it as soon as possible.

What if I have completed a Live Scan background check before for another organization?2026-04-14T16:28:03-07:00

The DOJ has stated that a Live Scan cannot be transferred from another organization in or out of state so you will need to complete one specifically to serve with Joni and Friends.

Once you have completed a Live Scan for Joni and Friends, you will not need to complete another one for us again.

If I am applying as a family/participant applicant, do I need to complete a Live Scan background check?2026-04-14T16:33:40-07:00

No, the law only states that volunteers need to complete it. Family applicants aged 18+ will continue to utilize the current Protect My Ministry system.
