As a Joni and Friends Intern, you will receive training on a biblical view of disability and a theology of suffering with practical application on how to build disability ministries that serve people affected by disability.

1. Beyond Suffering
Beyond Suffering is the flagship curriculum of The Joni Eareckson Tada Disability Research Center at Joni and Friends. This core text was created to transform the way Christians view God’s Plan for disability and suffering through biblical education on the theology of suffering. First year Hardin-Simmons Doctoral of Physical Therapy students receive biblical education on a theology of suffering, using Beyond Suffering as a core text, during the Spring 2025 semester at Hardin-Simmons University.

2. Texas Family Retreat
Hardin-Simmons DPT students will serve as Volunteers at the Joni and Friends Texas Family Retreat Week One, learning what it means to be friends with a person living with disability.

3. International Missions to Kenya
As a capstone to the internship, students serve people affected by disability through a Wheels for the World distribution in Kijaido, Kenya (July 18-28, 2025), connecting people with disabilities with the local church. As both a Hardin-Simmons DPT student and a Joni & Friends intern, next generation leaders have the opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus – meeting real needs through therapeutic intervention and education, while ministering to the hope found in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

“My trip with my DPT program helped me develop a servant’s heart.” Quote from Intern (Joe Eunice)

We are carefully proceeding with this internship with safety protocols in place. If Joni and Friends cancels the event we will refund or reallocate the donations in accordance with our current policies.
