Global Mission Internship Uganda

June 2, 2024 - June 29, 2024

A group of interns in Uganda

This internship, available to Ugandan nationals only, will provide the unique experience of being part of a fully indigenous Joni and Friends team. Students from African Renewal University (ARU) will be trained on the biblical view of disability and a theology of suffering through our Beyond Suffering (BYS) curriculum, and in practical application of serving people living with disability.

Interns will serve at a Joni and Friends Family Retreat, where they will be able to help families by sharing God’s love and offering hope to those who have been impacted by disability. Many of these families are facing extraordinary challenges as well as exclusion from local community life. Interns will model inclusion as they serve as buddies to participants, while their caregivers receive much-needed respite. Retreat programs consist of small group discussions, arts and crafts, recreation and games, Bible stories, and more!

The team will serve at the Kampala School for the Physically Handicapped where they will provide resources for teachers and staff at the school. The team will run a Vacation Bible School for the children and provide specialized training on an as needed basis.

The team will have the opportunity to serve with Hope Speaks, a NGO in Kampala, whose mission is to “Inspire hope and raise voices of people with disabilities through therapy, advocacy, and social services.”

Interns will also serve with the Father’s Heart Mobility Ministry, a Joni and Friends partner that serves with local churches to “raise esteem and capability among people with disabilities by providing wheelchairs to those in need.” In 2006, Father’s Heart Mobility was founded by Francis Ugwanya, who at age 12, was lifted up out of the dirt and given his own wheelchair. This organization has now given over 18,000 people in Uganda their mobility.
