With Fervent Cries

During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.

Hebrews 5:7

When I contracted COVID and struggled to breathe at night, I cried out to Jesus, pleading for help. I knew that Jesus would understand my cries because Hebrews chapter 5 says that during the days of his own life on earth Jesus “offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears.” The pain was so menacing, Jesus prays “with fervent cries;” I mean, heartfelt tears.

He found strength, however, when he yielded to his Father’s will to let the Father take gentle, firm possession of his own suffering. And with COVID, I did the same. G.D. Watson wrote, “When the suffering soul reaches a calm, sweet carelessness; when it can inwardly smile at its own suffering, and not even ask to be delivered, then the cross you carry begins to weave itself into a glorious crown.” Today sink yourself into God’s hard, wonderful will and find rest.
