Treasure Christ
“After seeing him, the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child. All who heard the shepherds’ story were astonished, but Mary kept all these things in her heart and thought about them often.”
Luke 2:17-19 (NLT)
Years ago, I was in the home of my niece, delighting in the way she was holding her precious newborn. She was sitting in a large, enclosed windowsill with her back against one side and her baby snuggled up in an afghan against her raised knees.
It seemed such a comfortable, contemporary way to cradle her little one, and I wondered, Did Mary ever hold Baby Jesus like that?
When I got back to my art studio, I couldn’t wait to draw Mary holding her baby in the same way as my niece had held hers. True, Mary and Joseph lived in more humble lodgings, but I wanted to capture the wonder of Mary looking into the face of her baby, treasuring it all up to ponder in her heart.
Today, accept the invitation to wonder. Unpack all that is in your heart concerning the Christ Child, your Savior. Treasure up everything you think about and, like Mary, ponder what his birth means.
Jesus, sometimes in the hustle and bustle, I lose my wonder at what this season is all about. Forgive me for allowing things to crowd out the delight I can have in thinking about you. I want to treasure you in my heart today and every day.
