To Live is Christ
“For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.”
Philippians 1:21
When I was a teenager and came to Christ, I underlined Philippians 1, 21 in my Bible. I wanted my high school to know that, “For me, to live is Christ.” And I meant it (or I sort of did). Like, if someone sneers at Christianity, I’ll stick up for you, Jesus. I’ll live for you in the schoolyard. I’ll stick to your standards when I’m with my boyfriend—yeah, and how long did that last?
But after I broke my neck? I realized I knew nothing about living for Christ. I had been skating on the surface. But quadriplegia threw me into the arms of Jesus and up against his heart. And I’m so glad. Because suffering (as nothing else) takes us below the surface; it unites us to our suffering Savior. Yes, it is your afflictions that help you to say (and mean), “For me, to live is Christ.”
