“First, make a small loaf of bread for me.”

1 Kings 17:13

Imagine standing in your kitchen, with enough ingredients for one final meal.

That was the reality the widow of Zarephath faced. A severe drought had devastated the land. Food was scarce, and hope was fading. When Elijah found her, she was gathering sticks to prepare what she believed would be her last meal before she and her son died.

Then came an unexpected request. Elijah asked her to feed him first.

From a human perspective, the request seemed unreasonable. Yet it was accompanied by a promise from God that the flour would not run out, and the oil would not run dry until rain returned to the land.

The widow faced a choice. She could cling to what little she had or trust God’s Word.

Faith led her to obey.

Notice that God’s provision did not arrive before her obedience. The miracle followed her step of faith. Each day thereafter, she found enough flour and oil for that day. God did not provide a warehouse full of supplies. He provided daily bread.

Many of us would prefer that God show us the entire plan before asking us to trust Him. Yet He often works differently. He invites us to take the next step and trust Him for what comes next.

For families living with disability, caregivers facing uncertainty, or anyone walking through a difficult season, this story offers encouragement. God sees our needs long before we do. His provision may not always come as we expect, but His faithfulness never fails.

The widow discovered that obedience opens the door to experiencing God’s provision.

God rarely fills the whole pantry in advance. He gives enough for today to teach you to trust Him for tomorrow.
