The Love Of God
We have such stunted notions of the love of God. We say to ourselves, “I’m a Christian; of course, God’s gonna forgive me for… whatever. I mean, come on he loves me. That’s his job!” But the love of God is not at our beck and call; it is not tame.
God’s love is far more complex. The love of God I think can be best understood in relation to the hell you deserve. And, yes, you and I deserve hell (so let’s not be complaining when God mercifully gives us just a tiny little taste of what that real hell would’ve been like for us, were it not for Jesus).
So… The love of God for you and me demonstrates his value, his worth (certainly not ours). God’s love toward sinners shines out of what it is against; that is, the backdrop of our rebellion and the hell that should be ours. And that should prove to you, the immeasurable, the astounding, amazing love of Jesus.
