The Light of Christmas Eve

“The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine.”

Isaiah 9:2 (NLT)

One of my favorite art books is by Maxfield Parrish. He was an American painter in the first part of the 20th century and known for his neoclassical works. His most celebrated painting is of a farm in the dark of winter, and his use of blue makes the scene look icy cold.

The only warm spot in the painting is a golden glow shining from the farmhouse window. Looking at his work, I became inspired. I chose a palette of cool tones for my painting, with one exception.

I wanted the windows of my little mountain church to glow. I imagined this church on Christmas Eve night, inviting all who saw to come in and find warmth, comfort, joy, and a happy welcome. Isn’t that what Christmas Eve is all about? “People who walk in darkness will see a great light,” Isaiah tells us.

In your last-minute errands or going to and from church, share the great light of Jesus with those you encounter. Let them see that they will find comfort and a happy welcome in the light of Christ

Jesus, thank you for piercing the darkness with your light and life. When I feel chilled by the darkness of the world around me, remind me to draw nearer to you.
