John 6:1–13

“Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish.”

John 6:9

Most of us have experienced the feeling of not having enough.

Not enough money. Not enough energy. Not enough influence. Not enough ability to make a difference.

As thousands gathered to hear Jesus teach near the Sea of Galilee, the disciples faced an impossible problem. A massive crowd was hungry, and there was no practical way to feed them. When Andrew surveyed the situation, he found a small boy with a modest lunch—five barley loaves and two fish.

Compared to the need, it was almost nothing. Yet the boy gave what he had.

Scripture never records his name. We do not know his age. We do not know what he thought as his lunch was placed in Jesus’s hands. What we do know is that his willingness to surrender a small gift became the starting point for one of Jesus’s most famous miracles.

The miracle did not begin with abundance but with availability.

God has always specialized in multiplying what is surrendered to Him. Moses had a staff. David had a sling. The widow had a jar of oil. This boy had a lunch.

Too often, we underestimate what God can do through seemingly insignificant offerings. A word of encouragement. A prayer. An act of kindness. A generous gift. A willingness to serve.

When placed in Christ’s hands, ordinary things can have an extraordinary impact.

The boy could not feed five thousand people, but Jesus could!

The same is true for us. God does not ask us to provide everything that is needed. He simply asks us to offer what we have.

Miracles don’t begin with abundance. They begin with someone willing to hand over what little they have.
