Take the Initiative

“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

Proverbs 15:1

Like all married couples, Ken and I disagree at times. And sometimes we hurt one another’s feelings in those disagreements. I remember the time a quarrel was still hanging heavily in the air, and Ken and I sat in stubborn silence. Finally, Ken spoke up. “Okay, so we don’t measure up to one another’s expectations.” After a pause, he added, “So maybe we should pray.”

I knew he was right, but at that moment, praying with him or for him was the last thing I wanted to do. Yet as my husband began to pray, humbling himself before God, tears started flowing. And hearts started melting.

Today’s Scripture reads, “A gentle answer turns away wrath,” and so does a gentle prayer! If you are in a disagreement with your spouse, family member, or close friend, take the first step. Take the initiative. Say something or pray something. It’s not easy, but it will open the door to grace and peace, healing, and forgiveness.

Lord Jesus, You were the offended one. You were the One who was rejected, ignored, devalued, and despised. But You weren’t satisfied with the status quo. You took the initiative with us. You broke the impasse, coming to earth and giving Yourself for our sins. And now Your gentle voice says, “Come to Me.”
