Suffering’s Goal

I know something about suffering and how it can hurt. I’m paralyzed, I’ve got chronic pain, scoliosis and pressure sores from sitting for years in a wheelchair. Now… notice something. All those ailments are physical: paralysis, pain, scoliosis, pressure wounds. And it hurts. My body has suffered great harm from years of quadriplegia. But, have all these problems harmed my soul? No way. They’ve strengthened my soul.

Jesus Christ has removed the only kind of suffering that can ever truly harm me (that is, eternal separation from God). And so now, whatever suffering comes my way only makes my soul large with courage. And it’s true for you. Suffering may harm your body, but God has designed to stretch your soul’s capacity for himself and to make your soul great. And that’s not bad at all.
