Love Lifted Me

“When he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’ Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. ‘You of little faith,’ he said, ‘why did you doubt?’”

Matthew 14:30-31

I enjoy singing hymns. Hardly a day goes by that I don’t stop whatever I’m doing, open a hymnal with a friend, and sing a few stanzas. But hey, I don’t have to stop what I’m doing. Sometimes I keep doing what I’m doing and sing. But the hymns always make me thankful—and sometimes they help me express thanks.

Once when I was a speaker at a conference, I encountered a bunch of steps leading to a meeting room. With no ramp I was stuck. Well, not really. We flagged down four strong guys and gave them instructions about where to hold the wheelchair. As they carried me, I sang a thank hymn to them, “Love Lifted Me.” And I meant it. Love that is put into practice always gives us a lift. Love with its sleeves rolled up, with muscle behind it, love that looks for a need and rushes to meet it, love that does something—that’s the kind of love that ministers most. That’s the sort of love the Lord Jesus has for us.

Souls in danger look above, Jesus completely saves;

He will lift you by his love out of the angry waves;

He’s the Master of the sea, billows his will obey;

He your Savior wants to be, be saved today.

Love lifted me! Love lifted me!

When nothing else could help, love lifted me!

What has you stuck today? Where do you feel blocked? Is there no way out? Sure there is. Commit your concerns to the Lord, and then put the hymn “Love Lifted Me” in your heart. Make it a practice to sing it the rest of the day. It’s one way to say thanks to the Lord Jesus for his love that lifts.

My heart lifts thanks to you, Lord. Help me to lift others with your love today. And put a song in my heart that I can offer up to you as an expression of gratitude.
