I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life

“I am the way and the truth and the life.”
John 14:6
Jesus speaks these words in the Upper Room during a final meal with His disciples on the night before His crucifixion. The room is heavy with emotion, and the cross is near. Jesus knows what is coming and chooses His words carefully.
Thomas wants clarity. He wants direction. Jesus does not give him a map or a system. He gives him Himself. “I AM the way, the truth, and the life.” Once again, Jesus uses the sacred “I AM,” the language God used to describe Himself. The way to God, the truth about God, and the life of God are not found apart from Jesus.
Jesus is The Way because He bridges the gap between heaven and earth. He is The Truth because He reveals God as He truly is. He is The Life because life itself flows from Him.
Truth feels harder to discern than ever. Our world is filled with competing claims and constant accusations of “fake news.” With AI, images, words, and even voices can be fabricated. It is difficult to know what is real.
Jesus’ claims still trouble people. Over the years, it was not uncommon for someone to approach me after a sermon and say they did not like that I said Jesus was the only way to God or to heaven. “All roads lead to heaven,” they would insist. My response was usually simple and gentle. “I didn’t say He was the only way. Jesus did.”
Jesus’ claim is exclusive, but it is not harsh. He does not close the door to God. He opens it by offering Himself. Life with God is not found through many paths. It is received through faith in Christ alone.
In a confusing world, Jesus offers clarity. In a polarized world, He offers unchanging truth. In a fragile world, He offers life that cannot be taken away.
Trust the One Who declares Himself the way, the truth, and the life.
