I AM the Resurrection and the Life

“I am the resurrection and the life.”

John 11:25

Jesus speaks these words in the presence of deep grief. Lazarus has died. The sorrow is real and heavy. Martha meets Jesus with honest pain and little hope. In that moment, Jesus does not begin with an explanation. He makes a declaration.

When Jesus says, “I AM the resurrection and the life,” He is not only pointing to something that will happen someday. He is revealing who He is right now. Resurrection is not merely a future event. Life is not merely a promise beyond the grave. Both resurrection and life are found in Him.

This claim carries divine weight. Only God has authority over life and death. By saying “I AM the resurrection and the life,” Jesus again speaks in the language God used of Himself. The power to raise the dead does not come from Jesus. It resides in Him.

Jesus does not stand at a distance from human sorrow. John tells us that He weeps. He enters into the pain of loss even as He holds power over death. Compassion and authority meet in the same moment.

Then Jesus calls Lazarus by name. The tomb does not have the final word. Death gives way to life at the sound of His voice.

For those walking through grief, this truth anchors hope. Jesus does not minimize loss. He meets us in it. The life He offers reaches beyond the grave and begins even now.

To trust Jesus is to trust the One who stands on both sides of death. He is present in our sorrow, and He is powerful to bring life where death seems final.

In Jesus, death never has the final word.
