Holy Week: Thursday
“As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. So Jesus told him, ‘What you are about to do, do quickly.’”
John 13:27
Do you recall what it’s like to cram for an exam? Especially a “now or never” exam? How about an exam on the Bible? Unless you’re a seminary student, you probably wouldn’t feel prepared.
But suppose you were thrust into such a situation? Suppose everything—your entire future as a Christian—depended on that exam? You’d panic, right? I know you would. I would, too.
Well, that’s no doubt how the disciples felt the evening they were with Jesus at the Last Supper. Because up until the end of the evening, everything was warm and personal. There was even that touching moment when Jesus washed their feet. But the mood shifted when Jesus spoke those strange words to Judas, “What you are about to do, do quickly.”
Judas left and from that point on, the tone of the evening changed. It was as if the Lord realized he had pressing things to say and only a short time in which to say them.
Jesus gave his disciples clear instructions at the Last Supper. We remember his critical mandates on this Maundy Thursday, which is named after the Latin word meaning commandment.
