His Workmanship
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
Ephesians 2:10
The first time I saw myself in my wheelchair in a full-length mirror, I cried. I’d just been released from the hospital and friends took me to a shopping mall. They felt badly about my reaction. But seeing myself, sitting all frumpy and paralyzed, I thought: If God is love and also the Creator, and if what I see in the mirror is a loving reflection of his creation, then… I’m not very happy with him. ‘Then’ I read in Ephesians that I was his workmanship, and he wasn’t finished with me yet. It was enough to push me into growing in the grace and knowledge of my Lord Jesus. And knowing him changed everything. Even my appearance: I started smiling, from the inside out. And now? That’s what I see in the mirror. And Jesus is ‘still’ working on me!
