He Bore the Full Weight

“He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.”

1 Peter 2:24

In front of Rockefeller Plaza in New York City stands a famous statue from Greek mythology—Atlas, bearing the earth on his shoulders. The huge globe he holds looks terribly heavy. Even his mighty knees seem to be buckling under the weight. It reminds me of how people talk about Jesus bearing the sins of the world—as though He had a massive, invisible weight on His shoulders.

But today’s Scripture reads, “He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross.” (Emphasis mine). He didn’t carry our sins on His back; He took our sins into Himself! It happened on the inside. When God saw Jesus on the cross, He literally saw our sin. Jesus experienced the full weight of God’s anger meant for you and me. God “made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Lord Jesus, there is nothing fair about this exchange. You took my sins into Your own body, paying my penalty. And in trade, You gave me Your righteousness, purity, and sinless beauty! You took on my death, allowing me to receive Your life. I will never comprehend this. I am in awe of Your love today.
