Even in the Darkness

A beam of sunlight shining through a cave opening and reflecting on an underground body of water.

“Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the word of his servant? Let the one who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the Lord and rely on their God.”

Isaiah 50:10

Everyone ought to experience, at least once, a very deep cavern. Thousands of tourists do so every year, at places such as Carlsbad Caverns, Mammoth Cave, or Oregon Caves. It’s perfectly safe on a guided tour, but at some point, the guide will usually turn out the lights just to show how dark darkness can really be. This is a blackness you can feel, heavy as water. Children quickly reach for their parents’ hands, just for reassurance!

Perhaps you’ve been through some very dark times in your life. The sun might be shining, but darkness grips your mind and heart. The words of today’s Scripture give great comfort: “Let the one who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the Lord and rely on their God.”

Your heavenly Father will never lose you in the dark. Hold His hand; He will guide you through any cavern and back into the light.

Praise You, Father. You have been with me in many places that have been so very dark. I have cried out to You and reached for Your hand, and You have always been there. As David prayed, “Darkness is as light to you” (Psalm 139:12). I won’t even fear the valley of the shadow of death, because You are with me.
