Do Not Commit Adultery

“Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry.”

1 Corinthians 10:14

I confess I often skip over the seventh commandment, “Thou shalt not commit adultery.” I skip over it because I love my husband and, thanks to God’s help, my eyes do not wander. However, there is an insidious way I do commit adultery. And it’s described in Ezekiel 6:9 where God says his people have gone whoring; they have prostituted themselves with their idols. They are loathsome in his sight because of their adulteries. Sadly, that is me.

Perhaps not all the time, but certainly lots of times. I commit adultery with idols. A favorite program on Netflix that takes up precious hours; my pride insisting that I don’t need to admit when I’m wrong and much more. So the next time you gloss over the seventh commandment, don’t skip it. Instead, confess the adultery that you commit with hidden idols in your life.
