“Before Abraham was born, I AM.”

John 8:58

Jesus does not ease into this statement. He does not soften or explain it away. He speaks plainly. “Before Abraham was born, I AM.” Those listening knew exactly what He meant.

Jesus was not merely claiming to exist before Abraham. He was using the sacred name of God, the same name revealed to Moses at the burning bush, “I AM WHO I AM.” In the Greek of John 8, the words are clear and deliberate, reflecting the same emphasis as the Hebrew of Exodus chapter 3. Jesus identifies Himself with the eternal, self-existent God.

The reaction says it all. They pick up stones. This was not a misunderstanding. It was a claim to deity. Jesus was saying that He did not come into being. He always was. He shares the name and nature of God.

This matters deeply. Our faith is not built on a wise teacher or a moral guide alone. It rests on the truth that Jesus is God with us. Eternal. Unchanging. Present before and creator of all things.

Over the next eight Sunday devotionals, we will spend time exploring the “I AM” statements of Jesus. Each one reveals something about who He is and how He meets us in our need. Together, they invite us to know Him more deeply and trust Him more fully.

For those who feel uncertain in a shifting world, this truth steadies us. Jesus is not limited by time. He is not surprised by history. He stands outside it yet enters it for our sake.

When Jesus says “I AM,” He invites trust. Not in an idea, but in the living God who knows us and comes near.

The One who walks with us today is the eternal God who has always been.
