A New Song
“He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God.”
Psalm 40:3
When I am in pain, I take the advice of others who’ve survived it. Like Amy Carmichael, the missionary to India who rescued kids from temple prostitution. She suffered a bad fall and spent 13 painful years in bed. Amy wrote to a friend; she said, “Yesterday when everything felt impossible, I read Psalm 40, “‘he’ has put a new song in my mouth.” It struck me that Jesus is the one who ‘puts’ it there. When we’re feeling down, we often cannot find a song of praise, so ‘he’ finds it for us and puts it in our hearts. And if we take a breath and, with a prayer, reach down into our hurting hearts, we ‘can’ (‘you’ can) sing a song of trust, courage, and peace. Like the Bible says, sing to the Lord a new (a hope-filled) song.
