The Poor in Spirit
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
Matthew 5:3
Would you consider yourself “poor in spirit?” Do you think it’s a good condition to be in? Or does being “poor in spirit” sound like you’re missing or lacking something? If you feel that way, then good. Because Jesus says in Matthew chapter 5, “Blessed are the poor in spirit.” In other words, blessed are you; that is, happy and glad are you if you are lacking spiritually, like, you know, you can’t make it.
Because it shows that you realize how much you need Jesus every single morning when you wake up. Look, when I start my day, I go to God in empty-handed spiritual poverty, cavernous, open, empty, and I’m knowing that I lack any strength to face the day. But then, God pours out his grace on people like that. So, when you get up tomorrow, recognize how poor in spirit you are, and then, watch Jesus fill you with himself.
Being poor in spirit reminds you of your deep need for Jesus every morning. Start the day by going to God in empty-handed spiritual poverty, knowing you lack the strength to face the day. He will pour out his grace on you!
