Our Friend the Spirit
I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. What helps get you through tough times? For me, it’s a friend who will listen, who will pray for me or cheer me on. Well, if you’re lacking a friend like that, always remember that the Holy Spirit is there to comfort and console, our first and best confidante in the midst of suffering. Romans 8 says, “The Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.” The Spirit is the one who lives inside us, so he is very intimately acquainted with your broken heart or your aching back. When it comes to his groanings on your behalf, believe me, he prays with genuine clarity and empathy. The Holy Spirit suffers with you. When it comes to seeing you through heartaches and headaches, you can’t have a better friend than the Spirit of the Living God. And that is something to celebrate today!
