Finding the Right Words

Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada, and sometimes it’s hard to know what to say around a person with a disability. There are so many awkward labels. I have been described as physically challenged, motion impaired, differently enabled, handi-capable, handi-copableand sometimes just plain “special.” People can get awfully tongue-tied, which can make them feel even more awkward and embarrassed. No wonder most people keep a safe distance between themselves and someone in a wheelchair, or with cerebral palsy. But Proverbs says that words fitly spoken are as apples of gold, so do not focus on the labels. Just focus on words like acceptance and kindness, compassionunderstanding. And if you must use a label, just say, “person with a disability” – that’s who I am – and that’s just fine. There’s lots of other fun stuff to learn about disability awareness. Just visit joniandfriends.org.
