Gehenna

A scene of a room in a dilapidated building with light streaming in the windows shining on the peeling pain, a small chair in the corner, and the door laying on the floor.

Did you know that Jesus talked more about hell than He ever did of heaven? Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada and it’s interesting that Jesus never spoke of hell as heaven’s counterpart. Uh, uh; heaven has no counterpart. Just as Satan is not God’s opposite, hell is not heaven’s opposite. One day, in the vastness of God’s infinite and redeemed universe, hell may end up being only a speck, a tiny trash heap like Gehenna (that’s how the Bible refers to hell). Gehenna was the junk yard outside of Jerusalem where people threw their garbage to burn. Hell will not pollute the purified universe because Christ will have preeminence. But hell exists, and you want to do everything in your power to keep others from choosing it. When Jesus talked about hell with all its awful terrors, it was meant to strike holy fear in our hearts warning us to seek heaven. Pass on that holy and fearful word today.
